Where is HUMM. available?

We are currently launched in Australia and New York City. If you have any questions about location and how you can use our app, please send us an email at hello@hummofficial.com .

But don’t fret! HUMM. is currently looking to expand into other cities across the globe. Stay tuned!

HOW DOES DELIVERY WORK?

When requesting rental of an item, HUMM. asks to specify if you would prefer to meet the owner to collect your item or have it shipped to you.

If you choose meet, you can organize a time and place (we always recommend a public place) with the owner through our in-app chat messenger.

If you choose ship, the owner will be get 2 x Express Post 3kg Satchels (one being their pre-addressed return satchel). Please note, the renter pays for round-trip shipping costs and provides the renter with the tracking number.

After you have worn the item, simply place the item in the return satchel and send it off!

HOW DOES dry-cleaning work?

When listing your item you are asked to specify whether you would like the renter to dry-clean / hand wash or machine wash your item or alternatively (if you have your own preferred drycleaner) you can add the cost of dry-cleaning into your rental price and dry clean it yourself.

HOW DOES INSURANCE WORK?

Renters pay a $5 flat fee for insurance that goes towards repairing damage or helping cover the full replacement value if your item is beyond repair.

But don’t fret! Our renters know to take care of your items and we have a very low damage rate across the app.

WHAT if i accidentally damage my rental?

As a renter, it is expected that you treat rented items as if they are your own. Our Customer Service team will handle all issues regarding damages to items.

The $5 insurance fee on every rental covers minor rips, stains, and tears. After each rental, we assess each item and have it repaired immediately if it has been damaged. If the item needs major repair, we will bill the renter for the cost of that repair. If an item is beyond repair and needs to be replaced, HUMM. will replace the item or compensate the lender for the current retail value of the dress and bill the renter accordingly.

is there a late fee?

HUMM. will charge a $25 late fee each day after the 7th day of your rental (however, this depends on whether the renter is dry-cleaning the item, in which case the return is expected to be delayed by a maximum of 2 days). If you can’t make your scheduled return pickup date/time, reschedule with the owner and email us – within good reason, we will wave the late fee.

how do i avoid being charged for items i did not damage?

While it is unfortunate, items that are rented out do experience normal wear and tear as well as other damages. If you receive an item that has already been damaged, please notify us immediately (24 hours before your event) and if you do not want to wear the item, we will either refund you in full for the rental (excluding shipping costs).

what happens if my request to rent an item is accepted but i want to cancel it?

Our lenders work hard to get their items to you and therefore allow 24 hours after the rental request is accepted to be cancelled.

If this is the case, please contact help@hummofficial.com immediately state your rental date and the user’s name and we will refund your rental payment within the next 3-5 days.

what happens if the item does not fit? what is the return policy?

When you rent an item, there’s always a chance it might not fit and you have to return it. If this is the case, please notify our customer support team WITHIN 24 hours of RECEIVING your item. Once you’ve notified us, use the return satchel provided in the package and attach it to and drop it off at the nearest post office (shipping cost will not be refunded), or alternatively meet with your lender and return it. You will be refunded the rental cost excluding delivery fee.

(Please note that while the refund is immediately processed and issued, it may take 5-7 days for it to show up on your bank statement.)

HOW DO I CANCEL MY RENTAL?

When you make a rental request, the owner begins preparing for your rental. If you cancel before the rental period begins (3 days before your event), you will receive a full refund. If the owner has already shipped the item, you will receive a refund, minus shipping costs ($30kg). If it is the day before your event, you will receive a 50% refund, minus shipping costs.

To make a cancellation, email us immediately with the date of your rental and the owner's name.

Renting Out Your Items

what is the difference between renting an item and consigning it?

Both offer you ways to monetize your closets but renting allows you maintain the option to wear the item again one day, and you can make more by renting your items than consigning them.

when do i get paid?

When you approve a rental request, the rental price will be taken out of the lender’s account. Their funds will transfer directly to you once the item is confirmed returned (please be aware that it can take anywhere from 8-12 days after the rental period begins).

how much does it cost to list my items?

Nothing! We don’t charge anything to be a lender. List your items for free.

how much do i make on each rental?

We recommend you price your item at 10-30% of the retail price. We take a 20% fee for providing our service and p

what type of items can i list?

    • Dresses
    • Skirts
    • Shirts
    • Pants
    • Outerwear
    • Shoes
    • Handbags
    • Headwear including hats and fascinators
    • Other accessories

Please keep in mind that while we do accept a variety of items, they must at least be $200 in retail value and less than 3 years old.

Also, right now our business model limits us to carrying women’s clothing. As for quality, we prefer items that don’t show obvious signs of use.

    what items rent best?

Right now dresses are our best rentals along with shoes, accessories, and handbags.

What rents best are items that:

    • Are less than 2 years old
    • Retails over $200
    • Are from the latest and most notable brands

Ideally, it’s that amazing purse you bought at Barneys over the past month, or that dress your friends are always asking where you bought it!

Quality in your closet over quantity will produce more rentals for you. Pick 3 to 5 of your favorite pieces vs your whole closet.

are you only looking for designer duds?

While a designer item may result in a higher rental price, we are looking for clothes that people would want to borrow. Typically our items have a minimum value of $200. However, if there’s a great dress that you bought in a Brooklyn boutique or on a trip to Paris that everyone always asks where you got it? – We want those too.

how much do i get as a lender?

Lenders get 80% of the basic rental fee – that is, the amount of the dress. For example, if a dress is listed as $100, lenders would get 80% so $80.

(Insurance and delivery fees are added on top of the basic rental fee.)

    do you only want dresses?

Dresses are great but you can also rent out jackets, coats, skirts, pants, bags, accessories. We are looking for every day designer items.

    how is pricing set?

We recommend anywhere between 10-30% off the retail price. Look at other listing to get an idea of how much your item would rent or sell for.

can i send in pictures of clothes on hangers?

No. As a borrower, the size and fit of an item is a major concern.

We recommend you Google your item and upload 2-4 images of the item (from a blogger or a department store site) and one of you in it! The more professional your listing looks the more likely it is to be rented!

The best way to help with this is to show how the clothes fit and hang on a real person. Plus, your items will always look better on you so it will increase the likelihood of it being rented. You can use pictures from events where you’ve worn the items – so start looking through all those Facebook and Instagram pictures.

how many times can i rent out an item before it's no longer in good enough condition?

As a rule of thumb, an item can be worn ~18 times until the wear and tear starts to show. After every 3 wears we recommend inspecting the item and adjusting the description and condition on the website as needed.

what happens if a renter returns the item due to 'poor condition'?

We’ll take a look at the notes and pictures provided by the borrower and compare them to those on the site. If the condition is accurately represented on the site, you don’t need to do anything. If we think the item needs to be updated or removed from the site we will notify you and make the change to the listing. We won’t charge the renter for the rental but will return the item to you.

what if someone ruins my item?

The $5 insurance fee on every rental covers minor rips, stains, and tears. After each rental, we assess each item and have it repaired immediately if it has been damaged. If the item needs major repair, we will bill the renter for the cost of that repair. If an item is beyond repair and needs to be replaced, HUMM. will replace the item or compensate the lender for the current retail value of the dress and bill the renter accordingly.

how do you verify the retail price of an item?

We verify the amount provided based on research and expertise on the industry and brand. We will do this prior to any item being listed on the app.

    who handles cleaning?

When you list your item, we ask you to specify whether your item needs to be dry-cleaned, hand washed or machine washed (please remember your return of the item may be longer if it needs to be dry-cleaned). You also select if you prefer to dry-clean the item yourself, add the dry-cleaning costs into your rental price.

    how does shipping work?

Easily. When one of your items is rented and the renter chooses the shipping option, we’ll ask the owner to go and buy two 3kg Express Shipping Satchels from Australia Post (USPS for New York). They will then place one of the satchels (pre-addressed) and the item into the other satchel and drop it to their nearest Post Office. The owner will then send you via in-app messenger the tracking number.

The day after your event, place the item in the return satchel and send it off!

when do i get my item back?

After every rental (if the renter need to dry clean your item so please factor in some time for that to be completed), we estimate that you will receive your item within three to five days after the rental date.

      how does the payment work?

We work with Stripe to manage a secure payments process. We do not require you to go off the site or set up accounts with any third party.
